November 15th: The Death of the Rialto
The Jack London Bar, 7:00
Come join us for an evening of fascinating RIALTO STORIES as we say goodbye to the Rialto Pool Hall and the Jack London Bar (both close for good on Christmas Day 2016!!) We invite YOU to join us for “The Death of The Rialto” – doors at 7:00pm, show at 7:30. The event is free.
Doug Kenck-Crispin will discuss the early history of the Rialto Billiard Parlors, and share some of the highlights from the OLCC records regarding the current establishment. Joe Streckert will illuminate Jim Elkins, 1950’s Portland’s racketeer king, who ran gambling and (gasp!) pinball throughout the city. That all came crashing down when the Seattle Teamsters and the feds came to town, and Elkins empire of numbers was no more. JB Fisher will talk about JD “Bob” Archer, Portland pool champion and owner of the Rialto and Elite Billiard Parlors in the 1940s and 50s. Recently discovered Oregon State Police files shed provocative new light on how vice operations were really being run in mid-century Portland. As you can see, plenty of new shit has come to light about one of your favorite Portland institutions! Kick Ass Oregon History’s Ghost Host, Andy Lindberg, will be the Master of Ceremonies, and there will be FREE NACHOS, as well as some books from the namesake of the establishment.
